I have found something that solved my problems, which were pretty basics in fact.... Does the midi indicator light when you press a key? You need to go to file>preferences>midi and make sure midi thru is active. See page 20 of the getting started manual.
You need to make sure your midi interface is recognised - go to devices>device setup and look at the top of the tree where it says midi and expands out to midi port setup. Your midi keyboard should be listed there. If not, check the windows device mangler and make sure the drivers are installed properly and that the midi device is turned on before you start Cubase.
You also need to insert the vst into the project (go to devices>vst instruments or press F11). You need to create a midi track and make sure the correct input is selected in the channel strip on the left. You also need to make sure the correct vst is selected in the midi output. You can also create an instrument track which is the new way of doing it which combines the midi and audio tracks for the vst.
To check the audio, go to devices>device setup and look at the bottom of the tree where it says VST Audio System. Your audio device / soundcard should be listed under here and in the right hand panel you want to select the ASIO driver associated with your soundcard. Again, if not, check the windows device mangler and make sure the drivers are installed properly for the soundcard.
You need to the make sure that Cubase is outputting the stereo mixer output to your soundcard. Go to Devices>VST Connections or F4 and under the Outputs* tab create BUS 1 and then under device port select the L and R channels of your soundcard.
* If you use the full version of Cubase and you use the Control Room you want may want to leave Outputs unconnected and select the Studio tab and connect the L and R channels of your soundcard to the device ports of the Monitor 1 output. It actually comes from this forum thread: www.gearvery *friendly* personz.com/board/electronic-music-instruments-electronic-music-production/384882-cubase-5-but-no-sound-cant-play-midi.html Hope it helps some of you.

I've solved this problem "MS GS Software Wavetable Synth, enable?" this mean that soundcard device output used by another program beside SONAR, FL, or DAW software else you use now, the problem is "what program is using according device?" usually default Equalizer of your soundcard can be, but others program can be too so you should disable your speaker playback in windows control panel before run DAW sofware it very easy, just right click on speaker playback > Disable so that we can change it back then we should checkbox "show hidden devices" by right click in blank area Okey.. I hope it can solve your problem

I was having this problem and going crazy trying to figure it out. I am using a Blue Yeti Microphone + FL Studio + ASIO4ALL on Windows 7. Rogers solution did the trick. Thank You!

well, I know this is an old thread, but I still am having issues despite all the numerous plausible solutions. My specifics: Windows 7 Running Pro Tools 10 E-MU 0404 Audio interface Under Playback Engine I have everything disabled except my Virtual Audio Cable which I need in order to get audio from Windows. Therefore the disabling Windows Audio solution doesn't work for me - I need Windows audio to work (and in any case I actually tried that solution and it didn't work). Here's a screenshot of my issue: The other odd thing to note is that my E-MU's sample rate is set to 48.0kHz - my Pro Tools settings are set to 48kHz as well. But in Asio the E-MU shows up as 44.1kHz I have tried literally all of the solutions posted on this forum and on other forums that I've come across. I've spent several hours at this and I work as a sound designer so it is very important that I get audio up and running again from Pro Tools. Pro Tools will not work without running Asio.

I tried rogers solution but it didnt work for me for Windows 7 but I did find a way for me to make it work I found a way to disable MS GS Wavetable synth by disabling "windows audio" in the service manager in Windows 7, I dont know if its the same in Vista or xp. Right click my computer go to manage, then go to service at the bottom of the menu tree, on the right scroll down to windows audio and stop the service, it will disable all windows sounds and you will not hear anything with it. But now, you can use asio4all without complications. Thank you so much! This is what everyone needs to do to get rid of any blocked audio output in Windows XP, Vista and Win 7, in short terms: set the windows sound and windows sound endpoint builder to STOP and MANUAL or DISABLED = NO MORE MICROSOFT GS WAVETABLE SYNTH - AWESOME and easy to do! Thank you again!

If you used Roger's solution and it didn't work; you may use this solution below. It is proven to work 100% of the time. Check to make sure you don't have any voip application running on the background.
Go to "task manager" and end any application running on the background that might be using audio settings...any voip application, and cAudioFilterAgent.exe (or cAudioFilterAgent64.exe); end these and restart your FL studio and you will be fine.
Enjoy...I have tried it multiple times to make sure that the solution is proven and yes, it does work perfectly well.

Now I re-enabled the service and the 2nd output still doesn't have any conflict with MS GS Wavetable Synth, so I can use both the windows audio service and ASIO4ALL. ty workd me as well, thanks for the solution!!
