Hello all --
I'm brand new new here, and frankly, I know nothing about sound engineering, etc., but, fortunately, I do know quite a bit about computers, so I can meet you half-way.
I'm a drummer, and I've just purchased fxpansion's BFD2 drum production package, and I'm giving serious consideration to building a dedicated computer to use with my drum modules and this software. Simply stated, I want to connect my drum modules to the computer so I can play using BFD2 and perhaps with background music and hear everything through either speakers of headphones.
From what I've read here and elsewhere, a USB connection with ASIO4ALL drivers is a very viable alternative to the much more expensive internal PCIe interfaces (e.g. RME). I am not a professional musician - just a guy who enjoys drumming and is looking forward to broadening his horizons - so I don't need a "hardcore" setup that can handle high quality digital recording or anything like that. But, I will be very displeased if my enjoyment suffers due to latency or other computer-related issues, and that's where I'd like your help.
That said, can you provide me some insight or point me in the direction of tutorials and information on...
1. How to set all this up - i.e. ASIO4ALL, USB connections, etc. to meet my stated goal.
2. The sound cards that work best with this type of setup in terms of performance, latency, and all the things you guys care about.
Finally, in general, do setups of this type tend to be CPU-intensive, RAM-intensive, or both?
So you know, I have posted similar questions on the fxpansion forum, but I'm very interested to see what the sound experts have to say as well.
Thanks for your time and any help you can provide!
Scott
