Hi there,
some VST instruments when in standalone mode, offers me to choose between 44100 and 48000 Hz. Which one is better, asumingly this is somewhat poor SoundMax audio driver/MBO integrated hardware (Asus P4P800) and does the same applies to host/sequencer program? Should I always go for 48 kHz with the option always resample 44.1/48 kHz set to disabled?
Thanx in advanced for your valuable comments!

Exactly what I was wondering about for some time. I have the same chip and would like to know.

Yes, I always run it at 48KHz with resampling turned off. This sound card works pretty well with ASIO4ALL. My sequencers work well this way too.

Here you get into the technical aspects of audio. In terms of hearing any difference between 44.1 and 48 KHz, you won't.
44.1 KHz is the standard playback sampling frequency of Audio CDs where the 44.1 KHz is (supposedly) twice the frequency of the audio spectrum of humans. (dogs can hear higher.) That's why I said "supposedly" because there is no human in the world that can hear audio frequencies of 22,500 Hz. the human range goes no higher than 20,000 Hz.
So, 48 KHz would be twice 24 KHz. These doublings of a base frequency are all based on the theories of a Mr Nyquest. He determined that in order to have a true representation of an audio signal in digital format, it would have to be sampled at twice the original frequency.
To cut the rest of this story short, simply remember that if you plan to create a CD of your work that your files will have to be downsampled to 44.1 KHz or they won't play in CD players. If it is for a DVD then you need to use 48 KHz.
So, it has nothing to do with what is "better" but with the medium that you want to save your final product to.
Use the highest sample rate (192 KHz, 96 KHz or 48KHz depending on your sound card) when processing your audio and sample done only when you are ready to put it on CD or DVD.
