Hi there,
It was hard but I finally managed to get the Alesis Multimix8 USB 2.0 working on my brand new laptop. I put here all the things I performed to make this work, hope this helps someone...
Here's my setup :
- Lenovo G710 laptop running Windows 8.1 x64. It has a embedded "IDT High Definition Audio Codec".
- Alesis Multimix8 USB 2.0 (should work with Multimix16 USB 2.0 too. The 2.0 is important, as other USB (not 2.0) Alesis device don't need drivers)
- Cubase 5.1 (x86)
Symptoms I had (with Cubase) :
- a 2s second delay while monitoring with the MM8
- OR a good sync at the beginning of replay but after a few seconds, the sound was really messy
- OR not sound at all....
First things first :
- download and install Alesis USB Audio driver x64 v2.9.13 (or newer if one day they release a new one...) from their website : alesis.com/stuff/contentmgr/files/22/753e55279cdf621f3f8f07f6c59d8632/file/alesis_usb2_x64_2.9.13.zip
- in the Windows Device Manager, you must see "Alesis USB Audio 2.9.13" under USB Bus Controllers, and "Alesis USB Audio - WDM 2.9.13" under Sound, video & game controllers. They must be both working (no ! sign in front. If not, try reinstalling the drivers. I had to restore a whole backup of my system after many tries... so take care).
- download and install ASIO4All (I used v2.11 beta 2)
- reboot if asked
Disable both Line in and Speakers corresponding to the Alexis MM8 :
- for that, in the notification bar of Windows (lower right corner), right click on the speaker icon.
- select Playback Device
- double click the speaker icon corresponding to the Alesis. At the botton of the speaker properties, select Do not use this device (disabled) and apply.
- do the same with the Recording Device
Note : these steps allow ASIO4all to use the Alesis MM8 inputs and outputs later in Cubase. If you forget these, ASIO4all will display a red X in front of the Alesis and "Used by another application ? MS GS Wavetable enabled ?" messages.
- run Cubase and start an empty project (to begin with)
- go to the Devices / Device configuration menu (or something like that, I own a French version)
- select the VST Audio System line. Change the ASIO driver to ASIO4ALL v2
- on my setup :
- "free the ASIO driver" is checked
- "Normal" priority
- "multiprocessor mode" is checked (I have a quad-Core i7 + HT)
- "adjust to recording latency" is checked
- "0 samples"
- under the VST Audio System line, click on the ASIO4ALL v2 line
- click on the Dashboard button (the topmost one), the ASIO4All panel will show up.
- enter Advanced mode
- expand Alesis USB Audio - WDM 2.9.13 : check both In and Out are selected. If you see a red X, please read above how to fix it.
- Latency compensation : In : 32 samples / Out : 32 samples
- Hardware Buffer : NOT checked
- Always resample 44.1 kHz <-> 48 kHz is checked
- Force WDM Driver to 16 bit is NOT checked
- close the ASIO4All panel
- click the Reset button (it may help !). Cubase may crash, don't worry. Just retry.
- Press F4 or go to the Devices / VST Connections menu
- add your Input and Output busses, ensuring the ASIO4ALL audio device is selected and connected to the Alesis USB Audio # you want to record / playback
- add tracks, and enjoy making music !
MANY MANY THANKS Michael Tippach : you saved my day !
