How exactly is this SUPPOSED to work?

I am a highly experienced audio engineer & computer user, though mostly Mac-based.
Having SERIOUS (income threatening) problems with my new pc systems and need help.

I have searched the ASIO4ALL pages, and can literally find no mention of its intended purpose. A bit strange, I think. I know all about drivers & ASIO, but I don't know what this app can do for me. It's either going to save my life, or waste more of what little time left I have on the planet.

I got here via VAC, which promissed to allow internal audio routing. VAC's instructions are written in Martian, but it does mention that with the help (addition?) of ASIO4all I can route ASIO-compliant software.

I am trying to route Native Instruments' Traktor into Ableton live.

Can someone at least answer the following simple questions:

1: Theoretically, is this what is supposed to be possible?

2: Do I need to install VAC at all, or could it in fact be causing my problems?

If you're still with me, and feel charitable, a bit more of your time could help me out more than you can imagine, as my income is literally depending upon some kind of solution.

With both ASIO4ALL and VAC installed, I do see ASIO4ALL as a choice within Traktor's audio-card selector. Great, looks promissing. I select this as my audio card (instead of my RME Multiface) and then see some output routing choices that I don't understand. (Yes, I read the manual.)

Well, moving on to Ableton Live: I do not see any direct channels from ASIO4all as input options. The manual says that some apps will only work in rewire mode. Heck that would be better, maybe I can even share timing info. I'm excited. On an Ableton audio track, I'm able to select "ASIO4ALL rewire" (or something similar, my pc's are packed right now) as an input source. Now I'm REALLY excited.

Sadly, when I play Traktor, no audio gets to Ableton. I asuume it has something to do with the output routing inside Traktor, but I've tried all the selections.

An ideas on what I might try / change?

Is it likely that it just isn't going to work?

Really strange as I use Rewire+ Vac + Asio4All + plasq worm for midi and audio over lan plus i use Midi OX + MIdi yoke drivers for internal midi from app to app inside the same PC complicated enough? lol

Since I dont have any problems in my Setup here is what i recomend

Either VAC will route the internal audio or ASIO4ALL will

So uninstall ASIO4all. Then uninstall VAC

1. Install ASIO4all with "NO" Rewire Support
2.Install VAC

or this example

uninstall both
1.Install VAC first
2.Install ASIO4ALL with Rewire Support

Could be a Setup first or last issue

then check our your hosts audio midi settings

This one is making me scratch my head here as i use those apps and I have never had any problems routing audio into the networked Audio PC's and routing internall audio or midi

I will try all this tonight, but

1: Which method specifically is working for you? (i.e. which would you suggest I try first?)

2: Am I correct in interpreting this that one cannot just use ASIO4ALL, without VAC? (even if the host only supports the rewire function of ASIO4ALL?

Carlos says it should work, the VAC guy says it should work, yet a sticky on this forum says you can't use two applications at once.

You can imagine my confusion & frustration.

I'm trying to use two applications at once, but I'm NOT trying to have them both access my multiface soundcard. I want Traktor to route into Ableton-Live, and then have LIVE access the soundcard. That's still two applications at once, but I don't think that's what the ticky is referring to (hence the stickky is incomplete and confusing.)

Can someone please, PLEASE clear this up for me?

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the idea is to use VAC in one app then asio in another. In which case you aren't using asio "in two apps at once". Now technically you can use asio in many apps if the underlying drivers support it, I can't say for VAC I haven't tried.

btw does anyone know if the new vista audio apis can be used to route output from 1 app to another without additional drivers for that?

Well, I use VAC also, but while I understand that it can be used as a soundcard replacement alone, I use asio4all in both appz, and VAC show up as more I/O for my needs, which I then use to route audio.

Example:
app#1: asio4all device menu -> VAC cable#1 OUT on IN off
app#2: asio4all device menu -> VAC cable#1 IN on OUT off

It works like a sutido patch bay, as long as the appz support mutiple I/O. Rewuschell in Reason does not which is where I use it the most.

I have no problem using the same HW with asio4all simultaneously in two devices. I'm unsure if this is due to an upgrade in asio4all or my drivers not properly installed and inproper HW access by the asio4all drivers. I plan to test this when I do a clean install.

However I have heard of a multi-client ASIO wrapper, some companies have made, so google is your friend.
