Sticky - because this is a FAQ and it seems that not everyone can be bothered to read the fine manual: - Most inexpensive audio devices support a single client only at any one time.
- Windows works around this by using the kmixer, a software mixing device in order to emulate multi-client support.
- kmixer is bad for latency.
- Bypassing kmixer is one of the main points of ASIO4ALL to begin with.
- Therefore: No multi-client with ASIO4ALL - unless your audio device supports this in hardware.
- Deal with it!

We think you should "Deal" with your attitude mate! He explains that you can't float a boat on dry land and says that's something you'll have to accept, and you criticize his attitude? I appreciated the concise but detailed technical explanation!

Man, am I confused. (Yes, I read the manual) In a recent thread, someone interpreted the above sticky as meaning, quote: "OK, I understand now that ASIO4all driver can serve only one application at the time....." Is that really what it means? I don't think so, but since I can't ge my routing thing happening, I'm beginning to wonder. As I wrote in another thread, ( mtippach.proboards40.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=1195020928&page=1 ) I discovered ASIO4ALL because it was recommended by the guy who wrote VAC. I was specifically told to use VAC with ASIO4ALL in order to route audio from one ASIO-compliant application (in my case, TRAKTOR) to another (in my case, Ableton Live.) That's two applications at once, and I sure can't get it to work. -But WTF? What exactly does ASIO4ALL do? I can't find an explanation anywhere. If it DOESN'T do this, then why did the VAC guy recommend it? VAC is an internal audio router, but it doesn't work with ASIO, and ASIO4ALL is supposed to solve this somehow. The VAC manual is a joke, and the guy who wrote it won't respond to my emails. He told me to ask here. Someone PLEASE explain this to me. I am literally losing money (not to mention time) because I can't get this to work. --------------------------------------------------------- BTW: Why isn't there a sticky that says, clearly and precisely, what ASIO4ALL does? Why isn't there a sticky that explains how to use ASIO4ALL in conjunction with VAC?

Oh Yes!!
3 years I have been trying to route virtual channels from Traktor DJ into Ableton
Tonight I made success, and oh was it a sweet feeling!
I have been doing this with soundflower on the Mac and by physically cabling between two different USB sound devices on my Windows laptop, 1 for Traktor and 1 for ableton and sending the midi sync info via midiyoke.
I finally managed to get ASIO4ALL, VAC and a new updated driver for my USB sound device to work, and yes it does work!
I messed about for the last 2 weeks with a beta prog called "Jack" (same thing as VAC but unlimited channels and it's for linux, but a beta version for windows is about), I could manage to send 4 channels of audio into ableton from Traktor and hear it but I could only set 1 master output in JackCtrl, obviously for DJ'ing you need another stereo for a headphone cue. So this was no good!
But with some tinkering about I went back to VAC, which I tried effortlessly with 2 or 3 years ago. BUt with the new updates it sounded promising.
Anyway I'm using a MAYA44 USB 4in/4out with driver 2.811 Intalled the latest ASIO4ALL V2 Installed VAC 4.08 Traktor 3.3 Ableton 6.07
Set the VAC to 2 cables.
Set Traktor audio to ASIO4ALL Click on control Panel Turn off all the VAC inputs and or outputs not being used Set Traktor outputs Channel a: Left: Virtual Cable 1 1 Right: Virtual Cable 1 2 Channel B: Left: Virtual Cable 2 1 Right: Virtual Cable 2 2
Open Ableton Choose ASIO4ALL Open Control panel Turnoff all the VAC outputs or other device in/outs not be used (Make sure what ever ASIO device you are using to monitor is turned on) Then enable abletons outputs and inputs being used. Then set Ableton Audio channels (Input 1/2 should correspond with Virtual Cable 1 1 and Virtual cable 2 2) and so forth Enabled monitor on the ableton audio channels and set the ext outs to you USB audio device (in my case Maya44 USB)
Bam, you have 2 stereo channels from Trktor routed into Ableton and then from ableton 2 channels into your mixer.
And then if you have midiyoke installed you can send the midi sync and beat info to sync ablton up, for Tempo FX or dropping clips!
Yeehaa!!
I wanted this for so long, no more need to take 2 soundcards and loads of cables about.
You will need a high spec laptop / PC to run Traktor and Ableton together especially if you plan to have ableton loaded to the rafters with FX plugins!!
Good Luck and happy tempo synced VST FX!!

OMG, am I excited.
You even were able to sync the clocks? Holy cow.....
one2one2, if this really works you will be officially elevated to demi-God status throughout the DJ community.
Gonna' try it tonight. Will report back.

Oh well, I had hopes for a while.
This just won't work. Ableton Live doesn't allow for accesingt two audio devices at once. I can't have it see ASIO4ALL for the Traktor input, AND see my Multiface for everything else.
My only chance might be the ASIO4ALL-Rewire thing, but I can't even begin to figure it out.
I don't suppose anyone hear has any ideas? (doesn't seem to be much activity on these forums.)

I've been thinking that there is no way of using Asio 4 all in one app and then get sound out of other software at the same time. But then tonight I helped my cousin installing asio 4 all drivers. And I said, I know it's great but here is the down side, and then to my suprise it just worked!
What I want to do is to use amplitube to play the sound from my guitar and still play along to the sound from guitar pro. (Wich just worked on my cousins computer tonight).
Im running sigmatel on a dell laptop and he also running sigmatel but on a stationary pc.
Also if I were to get a usb soundcard as well, would that enable me to hear the sound from the other software?
Thanks (And thanks a million for the great app!)
Fredrik

hello guys, it worked on my old laptop Dell c600 with soundcard ESS Maestro PCI Audio, I could even open more audio apps at the same time, Cubase (with ASIO4All Device), Winamp, WMP...
but it can not be running on my new notebook HP 6720s with soundcard SoundMAX Intgrated HD Digtal Audio, if I'm running Cubase, then the other apps will be getting dumb...
What's going on with it? Somebody could help me out of here?
BTW: this is still an amazing app! thanks for your work!

Since I "upgraded" to Vista from XP I'm having this problem as well. When I was using XP I had multiple programs running at once. Guitar Rig, and Guitar Pro 5 and Internet Explorer, all of which could play sound at the same time. Really handy for learning songs on the guitar. My sound card is just a plain jane Realtek HD Audio built in device. I can get 0ms latency with it and it sounds great. So for those that say running multiple apps with asio is not possible, I say it is but perhaps not with Vista. Anyone know of any windoz Fixes for this issue?
Cheers

Hello...I don't know if this is really your Problem, but there is a Function in Vista to allow more than one Sound Application at the same Time. I tried to explain it in German, because I dont know the right Words to find the Way in English. 1.) Go to "Systemsteuerung" 2.) Go to "Sound" 3.) Choose your Soundcard with Right Mouse Klick and choose "Eigenschaften" 4.) At the Registercard "Erweitert" you will find an Entry called: "Anwendungen haben alleinige Kontrolle über das Gerät" You will need to unmark this Entry - and thats it !

Is there no way of adding some sort of mixer app to asio4all or not an interest?
Right now I just add my songs into cubase to play my guitar along.

truth is this problem is only for vista. in xp i have not this problem. Chances are you have a Realtek High Definition Audio onboard thingy and the reason why it appears to work in XP is that Realtek have integrated some dodgy software mixing into their miniport for Win XP - at the price of horrible latency and more issues. See the Realtek thread for that matter! Solution is to roll back the Realtek driver to a known "good" state and once this is done, it'll be "single client" as a side effect. Under Vista they cannot pull these tricks, because here the driver is a WaveRT miniport, where WaveRT is a zero copy approach. Under Vista, all the crap they put into their XP WaveCyclic miniport has been moved into the user mode audio engine and is completely bypassed by ASIO4ALL.
